In the hope of becoming an active member of the world community and not just an adjunct of China, Myanmar has initiated reforms including the stop to the Chinese led dam on The Irawaddy. Most recently, it has freed prisoners mostly political. The numbers total between 200-300 depending on which side is reporting.
According to Reuters, the most prominent of those freed is a famous Myanmar comedian, Zarganar, sentenced in 2008 to 59 years in a remote prison for criticizing the then ruling generals on their sluggish response to Nargis, the cyclone that killed more than 140,000 in Myanmar.
Another prominent prisoner released was Sai Say Htan, the leader of the Shan State army who fought successive military regimes that ruled Myanmar after the 1962 coup.
Myanmar is slowly ending its isolation...the world is closely watching.
